The Morikami Park Elementary School PTA Green Team Welcomes You!
Friends of Morikami Preserve
Become part of history in the making here at Morikami Park Elementary School as we raise $45,000 to create an outdoor learning area for students to be completed in the 2012-13 school year.  The learning area will include a 600’ concrete path, and a 30’x30’ concrete learning area surrounded by a Pine Flatwood, Oak Hammock and Wetland habitats as well as a Bird and Butterfly garden.  Multiple signs will describe the benefits of each habitat and the importance of the role of water.

Educational and Health Benefits
Studies show that "students who learn in outside classrooms increase science scores by 27%".  Our program will include an Outdoor Curriculum Guide that teachers will use to engage students in hands-on science and IB Unit of Inquiry education.  Math and Science teachers will utilize the area to demonstrate science applications.  All classroom teachers will be able to use the area regularly as it applies to specific grade level learning without the need for signed permission slips as the property is owned by the PBC School District.

In addition to the Outdoor Curriculum Guide, teachers will be offered Project Wild teacher certification which includes extensive outdoor science exploration lessons.  We also are thankful to our partners, Pine Jog Environmental Education Center and the Arthur Marshall Foundation, who will assist with advice regarding best practices and innovative ideas for utilization of the area.

Although there are no guarantees regarding gains, we expect an elevated engagement of students resulting in increased learning.  According to Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, outdoor environmental education improves standardized test scores, develops problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills and reduces anxiety, depression and behavior issues.
