Teri Pavlus, Director of our Aftercare program, has created an exceptional green learning exploratory program.
Gardening – With the assistance of Shawn Hoskin, an Aftercare specialist with a native horticulture background, students tend four gardens and then enjoy the fruits of the labor by preparing meals as part of their Kids Cuisine project. The gardens include:
-
Hydroponic strawberry garden
-
An above ground edible garden of organic fruit, vegetable and herbs complete with a composter and rain barrel that students painted during our Earth Day celebration.
-
Butterfly garden
-
Japanese garden
Projects - Students explore many environmental topics and participate in projects such as creating recycled art, building bird houses and litter patrol.
Mural – With the help of Art Teacher Ellen DeRoxtro, professional artist Lori Rheingold and parent volunteer Cindy Papadoyianis, the Aftercare Brushstrokes Club participated in the Wyland Art is Life Mural Painting Contest. In honor of our school’s Habitat Restoration Project, students painted a 3-dimensional wetland mural featured at the Richard Louv event in March, 2011. The mural was also on display at the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
