Morikami Park Elementary School is located just south of Lawton Chiles Park, a 19 acre PBC County park that includes 6.25 acres of protected natural wetlands within a cypress dome. The PBC School District owns a 2 acre field between the wetland cypress dome and our playground., named the Morikami Preserve. Prior to the spring of 2010, the Preserve was largely overgrown with invasive weeds. In order to connect the environmental culture inherent in the IB curriculum with relevant, local environmental issues, we have developed a multi-phased plan to restore the field with native plants and trees. By restoring the field, we provide a real-life example to our students of taking action to help the environment and as a result, enhance animal and plant observation opportunities.
In order to ensure professional planning and implementation, we formed a Habitat Restoration Team. Their incredible expertise greatly enhances the success of the project and we are extremely thankful for their assistance. Our team members are pictured from left to right:
