Stage 1 of our Habitat Restoration Project was started on May 1, 2010. Approximately 780 native trees, shrubs, ground cover plants and flowers were planted in the wetland portion of the field between our school’s playground and the cypress dome at Lawton Chiles Park. Almost 80 volunteers participated, some of which are pictured here. We appreciate all of their hard work so much!!!
Prior to planting, an environmental education program was presented by Eric Gehring of the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation and Kristi Moyer from Pine Jog Environmental Education Center. Students and their families along with the Habitat Restoration Team, our administration and staff and special guest Mayor McDuffie of Delray Beach all enjoyed this special opportunity to help the environment.
Funding was made possible from several sources, including grants provided by Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful and the PBC Green School Recognition Program. Our PTA Green Store sold many items including custom printed tee shirts, 100% recycled cloth bags, stainless steel bottles as well as Wrap n Mats. During the holidays, the PTA Green Store sold “Plant A Tree” gift certificates that helped to fund the project while entering participants into a raffle drawing of prizes that were donated by area businesses.
We give special thanks to the Habitat Restoration Team, to our Administration for support, to our grant sponsors, to all of our volunteers and to everyone that purchased items from the Green Store. We are very grateful for your support!!!
